The Dawson County High School wrestling team is sending nine grapplers to the Montana All Class State Tournament this week.
Last weekend, DCHS placed fifth (142 points) in the Eastern A Divisional in Belgrade, behind Hardin (155), Lewistown (231), Havre (244.5) and Sidney/Fairview (328).
DCHS head coach Tim Zody told the Ranger-Review that the “main goal of the divisional was to qualify as many wrestlers as we could for the state tournament.”
Zody added: “Everything went pretty much as we expected. I feel good about our first round match ups. Now, we have to win the matches we are suppose to and maybe win some that we are not, in other words, lower seed beating higher seed. Anything can happen. It is like starting a new season.”
Senior Tyler Clapp earned a 4-1 decision over Sidney’s Jett Jones to win the 160-pound weight class at the divisional tournament. Clapp beat Jones after pinning opponents from Sidney, Belgrade and Havre. He scored 28 points for DCHS and goes into the state tournament with a record of 41-5.
Three Red Devils placed second in their weight classes, including senior Ben Stortz (145) pounds, sophomore Nelson Crisafulli (182) and junior Keegan Mires (285). The trio scored a combined 68 points for their team.
Stortz pinned grapplers from Billings Central, Laurel and Sidney, before losing a 8-0 decision to Martin Wilkie of Havre. He now has a season record of 33-7.
Crisafulli pinned a grappler from Belgrade and won by a decision over another from Lewistown, but he was turned on his back and pinned by Justin Zier of Hardin. He finished with a record of 38-9.
As for Mires, he pinned grapplers from Belgrade and Miles City and then pinned his teammate in senior Matt Fulton to get into the championship match. He eventually lost by a fall to Ryan Horner of Sidney and left the tournament with a record of 17-9.
Other DCHS placeholders included Fulton (fourth, 285); senior Cade Dockter (fifth, 170); senior Brandon Held (fourth, 170); freshman Colten Reidel (eighth, 138); and freshman Gullian Comstock ( eighth, 126).
The Red Devils were one team member short heading into Divisionals as sophomore Kirby Basta went out with a season-ending knee injury last week.
