Reverend Kent T. Swift
The Reverend Kent T. Swift, 93, of Billings passed away on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at St. Vincent’s Healthcare. He was born in Wales, N.D. on July 26, 1920, one of 7 children born to Delbert and Amber Swift.
Kent was raised on the family homestead north of Rudyard. He attended a one-room country school there from grades 1–8 and graduated from the Rudyard High School in 1938. He served in the Army Air Corp from 1942-1943. On December 10, 1944 Kent married Joanne N. LaCroix and he worked for Indian Services on the Rocky Boy Indian Reservation until 1947.
In 1949 Kent was assigned as a pastor in Broadview, the first of numerous pastoral placements including Beach and Trotter, N.D., Ollie, Glendive and Billings. A dedicated clergyman, he served the Evangelical Church, Evangelical United Brethren, and the Evangelical Church of N. America. He made 2 trips to Haiti and one to both Columbia and Ecuador. Kent found great joy in memorizing Scripture. He liked to bowl, play horseshoes, travel and preach.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Joanne, and 2 daughters, Nancy Swift and Linda Krieger. Survivors include a daughter, Kathy (James) Jones and a son, Thomas Swift, both of Billings; a brother, Gene Swift of Yakima, Wash.; 9 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.
The celebration of Kent’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, May 23 at the Faith Evangelical Church, 3145 Sweetwater Drive with interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Smith Downtown Chapel is assisting with arrangements.
