Blue Devils earn split in doubleheader with Lewistown

The Lewistown Red Birds came to Glendive Wednesday for an Eastern A doubleheader with the Blue Devils. The visitors came away with an extra inning win in the opener but the Devils bounced back to earn the split in game two.
The Red Birds struck first in the opener with a run in the top of the 3rd inning. They then extended their lead to 2-0 with another run in the 4th. Glendive answered with a run in the bottom of the 4th then tied the game in the 5th. The game remained tied at two into the 8th inning. Lewistown came up with six big runs in the extra frame and then held Glendive scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to pull off the 8-2 victory.
McKenzie Gross and Anthony Berg each had a pair of hits in the first game for the Blue Devils. Adrian Valenciano had a single to drive in a run for Glendive. Jake Holland also had a hit for the home team. Berg and Holland scored the runs for the Devils.
Six errors proved costly for the local squad in the opener. The Red Birds committed two errors. Lewistown outhit Glendive seven to six.
The Blue Devils scored three times in the first two innings and the went on to capture a 4-1 victory in the nightcap. Josh Stickel took the mound for the Blue Devils in game two. Stickel pitched a complete game to earn the win.
Glendive scored a lone run in the bottom of the 1st then added two more in the 2nd to go up 3-0. They would pick up an insurance run in the 4th when Stickel led off the inning with a solid single. Richie Franks would execute a successful sacrifice bunt to move Stickel in to scoring position. Stickel would come around to score on a grounder by Valenciano. Lewistown scored its lone run in the top of the 5th.
The Blue Devils’ ‘Culli Tournament’ is underway right now out at Meissner Field. Teams from Colstrip, Glasgow, Dickinson, Watford City and Bozeman are in town with the Blue Devils for this four-day tournament. Action will conclude on Sunday.
