Lady Red Devil Lexi Pettersen slides into home plate during the game against the Sidney Lady Eagles Tuesday. The Devils held the lead until the bottom half of the third inning, when Sidney exploded for six runs. DCHS scored three in the final inning to pull within two runs but came up short.

Lady Devils fall in shootout with Lady Eagles

The weather on Tuesday forced the girls’ softball game between Glendive and Sidney to be played on Wednesday. The one day delay did not affect the offenses for these two teams as they combined for 18 runs in the seven inning contest.  The Lady Devils got off to a quick start but could not hold the lead as the Eagles came back to pull out a 10-8 victory.

DCHS scored three times in the top of the first inning.  Wyniah Mintz led off the game with a single. Lexi Pettersen would also single and Amanda Mittlestadt reached base. All three of these Lady Devils would come around to score. Sarah Temple also had a key single in the inning to aid in the rally. Sidney had a homerun in the bottom half of the inning but after one the Devils were up 3-1.

The Lady Red Devils added to their lead with a pair of runs in the third. Pettersen again had a single and Cheyenne Ryan would later single. Haylee Storlie also added a single. This gave the Glendive squad a 5-1 lead. It wouldn’t last long as Sidney answered with a big six runs in its half of the third.

Errors were costly in the third as the Devils’ defense committed three errors.  That coupled with four hits by the Lady Eagles led to the big inning that gave Sidney a 7-5 lead heading to the fourth. The Eagles would build on this lead with a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to carry a 10-5 advantage into the final inning.

The Glendive girls did not give up as they battled valiantly in their last at bat.  Sami Calkins started a Red Devil rally with a base on balls. Calkins would come around to score when Mintz doubled. Mittlestadt then pulled the Devils within two with a two-run blast to centerfield, her third homer of the season. Ryan kept the rally going with a double but unfortunately for the Lady Devils they could not get any more runs. The game ended with the home team coming up with the 10-8 victory.

DCHS coach Todd Naasz commented after the game, “We let them back in the game in the third inning with poor defense, but we battled back and had our chances at the end. Nobody gave up.”

Mintz had three hits in the ballgame for Glendive. Pettersen, Mittlestadt and Ryan had two hits apiece. The varsity squad is now off until they travel to Dickinson next Thursday. The junior varsity team will be in action in Glendive on Monday. These JV games will be at BL Baker Field on the campus of Dawson Community College.
