The Dawson County High School softball team entered the weekend having already clinched the top seed in the Eastern A Tournament.
With non-conference wins over Browning and Cutbank, the DCHS team finished their regular season with a 13-4-1 overall record and a 9-1 conference standing which earned them a first-round bye in the tournament slated to run between May 18 and 19 on Kolberg Field at Dawson Community College. The girls will face the winner of the Billings Central and Sidney game at 2 p.m. Thursday.
“We have been hitting every day, and will continue to work on our defense in the infield,” DCHS head coach Todd Nassz said.
Last Friday, pitcher Carrie Nagle threw a nine-hitter in a hardfought victory against Cut Bank, 8-5. The Wolves were winning the game 4-1 until the Lady Red Devils rallied and scored five runs in the top of the fifth and bagged another two in the next inning. The girls recorded 17 hits. Nagle had a double and four RBIs. Seniors Cheyenne Ryan and Taya Torres also hit doubles to bat in a combined four runners. Senior Wyniah Mintz went 3-4 and sophomore Bailey Pearcy finished 2-3.
Later that day, the Lady Red Devils punished Browning in three innings, 14-2. Junior Shelbi Kaul proved dominant on the mound allowing only one hit against the Indians, and went 1-1 with two RBIs. Ryan and seniors Cheyenne Fisher and Syrell Dufner hit a combined eight runs home.
Saturday games were cancelled because of 37.5 inches of snowfall, Naasz wrote in an email.
This season, the senior-laden DCHS team depended on Nagle and Mintz to stifle batters, while their teammates tallied up runs. Before the opener, Nassz wrote that his senior-laden team “should be a favorite this year” and were “good hitters and aggressive on the bases.”
Last year, the girls won the Eastern A conference 9-1 and placed second in the Eastern A tournament. At state they lost to Havre 5-4, beat Hamilton 10-5 and lost to Fergus 6-3.
