Community needs its library for many reasons

Dear Editor:

I am writing in support of the Glendive Public Library levy on June 2. I have several reasons for doing this.

First, the Library is the only free public gathering place in Glendive. As such, all are welcome, regardless of the reason. It is an important place for members of the public to meet for appointments, see friends, or just look around.

Another important reason is computer access. There are many in the community who do not have a personal computer or “smart phone.” Nonetheless, these people need access to the internet for employment applications, government forms, basic news or entertainment. Without the Library, many members of the Glendive community would not have these services available to them. It would truly be a case of the “haves” or “have-nots.”

On a personal note, I use the Library for a number of reserach projects. The presence of the Library allows me to pursue these endeavors. While I have access to the internet at home, I cannot obtain the necessary books, newspapers, or microfilm that I need to take full advantage of the reserach tools that I can use.

Finally, the Library is a good place for the children of the community. It’s quite, safe, and orderly. The professional staff at the Glendive Public Library create a myriad of programs designed to help kids develop and sustain an interest in learning.

For the fiscal cost of the Library levy, $14.80 per $100,000 valuation per year, a necessary door of opportunity will remain open in Dawson County. With all that’s going on in the world, and at home, we sure need it.

With many thanks,

Michael Bugenstein
