Dawson County High School Lady Red Devil Madison Wahl goes up for the block during a match against Fergus County High School at the Eastern A Tip Off Tournament over the weekend. The Lady Red Devils had a very successful weekend, earning third place in the tournament.

The Dawson County Lady Red Devils started their season very successfully, earning third place at the Eastern A Tipoff Tournament in Havre.

The tournament gave the 10 members of the Lady Devils’ team their first look at all the teams they will compete against during the Eastern A Superdivisionals in late October.

The first day of the tournament was pool play, with teams playing each other in two sets to 25.

In pool play, the Lady Devils split sets with all teams they faced, with the exception of Miles City, who they defeated in both. The DCHS team won all matchups by overall points which put them in first place in their pool after the first day of play.

Saturday’s tournament included all teams in a double elimination bracket, with the best two of three sets determining the win.

DCHS defeated Laurel in three, defeated Miles City in two and then lost to a tough Billings Central team.

The Lady Devils defeated the Fergus Co. team in two to take third place overall.

Lady Red Devils Coach Tiffaney Egan said she felt like her team was in better physical shape than most teams at the tournament.

“At the end of the day, they looked really strong as far as their gym stamina. They kinda got a second wind in that last game, which is exactly what I like to see at this point in the season,” Egan said.

“It was a long day, and they just worked really, really hard,” she added.

She said even though they came out on top Friday, the Lady Devils went through some rough sets as they were figuring out how to mesh as team. They made adjustments and improved every single game after that, she said.

After seeing the other teams, Egan said she feels that the division is pretty even with the exception of the leaders Belgrade and Billings Central.

Egan said the weekend was full of quality performances by the Lady Red Devils.

Juniors Karsen Murphy and Meadow Torres both came out of the weekend with 51 kills apiece. Senior Tanille Lovato had 26 kills and “just really stepped up in times that we really needed,” Egan noted.

Madison Wahl, a sophomore, provided a good middle defensive option and was really strong blocking with eight blocks for the tournament.

Murphy had 13 blocks over the weekend, more blocks than she had during the entire previous season, according to Egan.

“We are seeing some strong improvement,” Egan added.

Torres had 81 digs. Senior Thea Robson had 67.

Setter Bailey Pearcy, a senior, had 130 assists over the two days. She also had 13 aces while serving.

Torres had 10 aces.

“Meadow just all around the board does very well,” Egan said.

The Lady Devils will head to Cody, Wyo. where they will face a lot of teams from Wyoming.

“We still have a lot of kinks to work out. We have some defensive things we are working out,” she said. “We’re strong, but have some definite areas where we can clean it up a little bit.”
