Dawson County High School junior Karsen Murphy broke the Class a State triple jump record at the State Track Meet in Laruel Saturday.

Dawson County High School junior Karsen Murphy capped an already impressive season with with two first place medals at the Class A State Track and Field Meet over the weekend. She won the high jump Friday, clearing 5’ 6” and then blew her personal record in the triple jump out of the water with a leap of 37’ 11.5”, which is a new state record for Class A girls.

“Karsen is a remarkable athlete with tremendous potential,” said DCHS head coach Tom Temple.

Before Saturday’s event, Murphy’s longest triple jump was well under 37 feet, but in her first attempt of the state meet, she nailed the winning jump. The record was previously held by Kalindra McFadden of Belgrade who completed a triple jump of 37’6.25” in 2003.

Murphy also dominated the high jump, clearing four inches higher than any of her competitors. Her teammate Emily Cooley, a freshman, got her personal record in the event at state clearing 5’2”, which was enough to earn her a fourth place finish. Savannah Toms, a junior, was in a three-way tie for seventh with a jump of 5’0”.

Both the boys and girls teams had two good days on the track, according to Temple.

The boys ended up 14th while the girls placed seventh.

The boys had four All-State performances behind two senior athletes. Reed Cooley placed 6th in the shot put and 4th in the discus. Logan Phipps placed 5th in the high jump and 4th in the pole vault.

“For the most part the boys team we took is young so we are about a year away from competing at a higher level,” Temple said. “It was nice for the freshman and sophomores to get some experience competing at that level, I know they will be stronger and faster by next year and our team will likely move up in the placings.”

Murphy, Cooley and sophomore Tianna Carney earned All-State status for the girls’ team.

“Carney capped a very consistent season by placing 5th in the pole vault,” Temple said. Sophomore Madison tied for seventh in the pole vault, going 9’6”.

The girls were led by the 20 point performance by Murphy.

“Like the boys, most of our girls team are underclassman. Even though many of them didn’t make the podium their performances were solid and many years would have placed,” Temple said.

“It was a real privilege coaching this group of athletes this season. As always it’s hard watching the seniors go, but I look forward to seeing how much better both the girls and boys are going to be next season,” Temple said.
