Peter “Pete” Joseph Knoll, age 93, of Glendive passed away on Friday, April 12, 2019 at the Eastern Montana Veteran’s Home in Glendive.

Services are pending and will be announced when completed. Silha Funeral Home of Glendive has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Pete was born on October 18, 1925 in Glendive, the youngest child of John and Appolonia (Schollser) Knoll. He joined four brothers: Ralph, Leo, Johnny and Emil. Pete was raised and educated in Glendive and graduated from Dawson County High School with the class of 1944. He was always a hard worker and during grade school he would pick up boxes to sell to Carey’s Sweet Shop and Hinsdale Bakery for about one or two cents or five cents for the extra good boxes. While in high school Pete played basketball and football and also delivered groceries for Reynold’s Warehouse.

Following his high school education Pete was drafted into the United States Army. He served in the South Pacific and he was proud to have been able to serve his country. Pete was honorably discharged from military service in November of 1946. Upon his return home Pete and a couple of his brothers helped their parents by hauling coal with a wagon and team of horses. Later, they continued working for their dad moving houses and hauling gravel, which was all shoveled by hand.

In 1951 Pete married Isabelle “Izzy” Miller, and they raised two children: JoJo and Patrick “PJ”.

In the early 60’s Pete’s dad bought a ready mix plant and ran it until the late 80’s when Pete & Izzy bought the business. The plant is now run by their son PJ and sonin-law, Wes Hagen.

Throughout those years Pete was a fireman for the Gate City Fire Department and was Assistant Fire Chief for many of those years. He loved the fire department and serving and working together. He also served on the ambulance department and at the time of his retirement he had responded to about 10,000 calls and put on about 300,000 miles. Pete retired from the fire department in 1992 after 43 years of service and retired from the ambulance department in 2001 after fifty-two years of service.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Appolonia; his four brothers, Ralph, Leo, John and Emil; one grandson, Todd; and one granddaughter, Mariah.

Pete is survived by his wife, Izzy of Glendive; his daughter, JoJo (Wes) Hagen of Glendive; his son, PJ (Tara) Knoll of Glendive; three grandchildren, MacKenzie of Miles City, Chase of Glendive, and Cade of Glendive; two great-grandchildren, Hadleigh and Carter of Miles City; two brothers-in-law, Don Doane and Gerald (Ann) Doane all of Glendive; and numerous nieces and nephews.
