DCC women lose 78-76

If there was more time on the clock, maybe the Lady Buccaneers could have won the ball game Sunday afternoon in Glendive. Dawson came up short to Lake Region State College 76-78. After Dawson won the first quarter 20-17, the Lady Royals bounced back and controlled both the second and third quarter, winning 26-20 and 23-12. The Lady Bucs would crawl back with some sharp outside shooting to win the fourth quarter 24-12, but it wasn’t quite enough to get them over the top.

Though Dawson outrebounded their opponents 45-31, 19 turnovers along with 18 bad passes contributed to their dismay. DCC would have a season high with 23 assists, scoring points from the bench was a difference maker. Lake Region scored 28 points off the bench, while DCC only had 17. The Lady Bucs had 11 team steals.

Ashley Orozco led the team with 19 points and 10 assists to post a double-double. Orozco had 2 steals and 3 rebounds as well. Haley Olson scored 14 points, shooting 3-7 from beyond the arc. Olson also had 6 rebounds. Ashya Klopfenstein had 11 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Ervianne Cly contributed 10 points and 4 rebounds.

Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. was in disbelief, “I know what this team is capable of, and it wasn’t what they displayed tonight. Lake Region plays for 40 minutes, and we didn’t. If we play 40 minutes, the outcome is much different. We didn’t communicate on defense today, and it showed. Passing had been a nightmare for us in the past. I didn’t think it would come back to haunt us. We need more practice as we keep our heads up and prepare for the next battle.”

Dawson will be on the road traveling to Wahpeton, ND to play North Dakota State College of Science on Thursday, Jan. 16 at 5:30 p.m.
