Duane D. (Pete) Pettersen

On May 14, 2020 Duane D. (Pete) Pettersen died at the age of 81 in Missoula after battling several cancers for nearly 60 years.

Duane was born in Dawson County and graduated from DCHS in 1957. He excelled in football, starting at running back for three years and elected co-captain his senior year. He played football at Eastern Montana College, where he received a bachelor’s degree, and he earned a master’s degree from the University of Montana. He then obtained his doctorate degree from Michigan State, where he married Shirley, who brought two children into their marriage. They moved to Missoula, where Duane taught at the University for many years. After retiring from the U. of M., he started an insurance business, which he owned until a year or so before his death.

Survivors include children, Mike and Stacey; several grandchildren; and a younger brother, Jim, of Glendive.
