Erwin was born on July 2, 1931 in Fallon, Montana the son of Gottlieb and Lydia (Schock) Lassle. Erwin grew up on the family farm in the Buffalo Rapids Irrigation Project 20 miles southwest of Glendive. He attended school thru the 8th grade at Yale School, just a couple miles from the farm. Erwin married Verna Kaul, the love of his life, on March 29, 1953 in Glendive. Together they bought a farm just a few miles from where he grew up and that is where they raised their six children.

Erwin was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Fallon and later in life a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Glendive. Erwin spent his entire life along the Yellowstone River. He loved fishing and spent a lot of his youth fishing and swimming with his brothers. Erwin farmed until 1964 when he realized he could not raise his family on farm income alone. He worked a couple different jobs and eventually ended up working for BNSF on the track maintenance crew for 25 years, where he retired. After Erwin and Verna retired they took numerous vacations and trips from coast to coast. Erwin loved to farm, he especially loved to plow and would sit in a tractor all day, well into his 80’s. He was extremely proud that the 4th generation is on Farm Unit 52, the unit he and Verna purchased in 1953. He was a devoted husband and a loving father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
