Eugene Staggs, age 93, of Wibaux passed away on Sunday, November 24, 2019 at the Fallon Medical Complex in Baker.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at the Silha Funeral Home in Wibaux. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at the Silha Funeral Home in Wibaux with Reverend Larry Phalen officiating. Interment will follow in Wibaux County Cemetery.

Eugene Lewis Staggs was born April 2, 1926 in Glendive, the son of W.L. and Pearl (McClain) Staggs of Wibaux.

Eugene, better known as Gene or Hayseed, was educated in Wibaux County and graduated in 1945.

Gene married Mae Belle Balducke on July 12, 1953 at the Church of the Nazarene in Sidney. They started their life together on his father’s homestead north of Wibaux. They were blessed with four children: Gloria, Nancy, Timothy and Lonna.

Gene was an avid learner and taught himself mechanics, electrical wiring and new ways to farm. His knowledge was incredible in many disciplines. Gene could fix just about anything that was broke and spent his talents on neighbors and friends. Gene learned how to wire from a book that he bought for 25 cents. He applied his knowledge by wiring many homes in Wibaux County.

He was quick to help someone in need and taught his children the value of honesty and hard work. Gene was like a human calculator, he could figure in his head and spit out the answer before you could grab your calculator.

Gene had an amazing attitude and his quick wit was soon to light up any room that he was in. Gene was respected by all that knew him. He was willing to share his knowledge and served on several boards including: Farmers Mutual Fire and Lightening Insurance Company, Wibaux Cooperative Elevator, Wibaux County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Golden West Electric Cooperative, Wibaux County Elementary School Board and Wibaux County Fair Board.

Gene was a great friend to many but for a few, an entire lifetime. This is a man you could pattern your life after. He lived his life according to his beliefs and it was visible with everything that he did. He made sure his family was taken care of and made his mark in this world by helping others.

He was preceded in death by his parents, W.L. and Pearl Staggs; one older infant brother, William Staggs; and his wife of nearly 50 years, Mae Belle Staggs.

Gene is survived by his children, Gloria Nelson (C.D.) of Wibaux, Nancy Carpenter (Rocky) of Sidney, Timothy Staggs of Wibaux, and Lonna Gustafson (Jody) of Glendive; grandchildren, Terry Carpenter (Wendy), Ryen Carpenter (Kaitlyn), Brady Carpenter (Jessica), Jenna Gustafson, Ervin (Colton), and Jade Gustafson; and great-grandchildren, Hadley and Lucille Carpenter.
