Generosity will keep Glendive looking festive

Dear Editor:

30 years ago while I was working for the City of Glendive I realized what a dilapidated state all of the downtown Christmas decorations were in. Most of them barely had lights or garland on them at all. The City of Glendive does not own or pay for any improvements on the Christmas decorations. They store and install them. That is when I talked to my family and we decided to make the downtown Christmas decorations our personal project to enhance Glendive. Starting out things were pretty rough as there was so much to do and not much money to do it with. My family had no real background in Christmas decorations, except for the ones on our house, and no promises to give to the public, but the public cautiously started to donate to the fund and the renovation of the decorations began. As years went by and the newly repaired decorations started showing up on the light poles, the public, businesses and civic groups started jumping on the bandwagon and made it possible for my family to expand the decorations to more light poles and begin decorating both of the parks on Merrill Avenue. Families started requesting that we build memorial decorations in memory of their loved ones, which we did including two new memorials for our fathers, with all being paid for by the people making the requests. I swear I could write a book on the touching and emotional stories I have witnessed from elementary school classes to the elderly with their generosity.

Just recently I was approached about having a fundraiser for the Christmas decoration fund. The results were overwhelming.

All of the Hood families really believe in Glendive and with the generosity shown from all the individuals that dropped donations by our house and that attended the fundraiser, along with the gracious local businesses and civic groups has shown me that they also believe in Glendive.

The outpouring of support for the Christmas Decoration Program is so impressive to me and my family. A huge thank you goes out to everyone that has donated time and money to the downtown decoration fund. Also thanks to all my family members, Robyn, Travis, Andrea, Steven, Ryan and Paige. Without their help, the downtown Christmas decorations would not get prepared and put up.

Glendive can be proud to know that their generosity and assistance will keep Glendive looking Festive and Merry for years to come!

Merry Christmas and happy holidays from all the Hood families!

Terry Hood
