He was the seventh child of Mathias and Mary (Verkennis) Dufner, born on Sept. 9, 1941 in Glendive. Jim attended Sacred Heart School

Jim attended Sacred Heart School through eighth grade and graduated from Dawson County High School in 1959. He enjoyed all sports, competing in football, basketball, track and baseball.

After high school, he enlisted in the Army and spent two years and three months serving in Germany. After his honorable discharge, he joined his father and brothers in the family business, Dufner’s Dairy. Later, they expanded into other ventures: Duff’s Club and the Jock Stop. A hard-working family for sure!

Jim also coached Junior High basketball at Sacred Heart School for 10 years. He would readily admit that he was a pretty tough coach and proud of it, as his winning record showed!

On Aug. 22, 1964, Jim married Nicki Cusker. They had two children, Tana Marie and Ty James. This was the beginning of a lifetime filled with fun and adventure. Everything centered around their children’s athletic events.

Agate hunting started as a pastime for him but developed into a great hobby. He became quite an accomplished racquetball player, having access to courts and tournaments at the Duff’s Club. He also enjoyed bird hunting and fishing. His all-time favorite though, was watching his grandkids’ games. Gramps was their armchair coach. Great advice he could always give!
