Lavern (Pete) V. Reil was born on September 5, 1931 to William C. and Lydia (Buttke) Reil. Pete grew up on the family farm outside of Corona, S.D. with his siblings Thelma, Reuben, Jim, Ike, Helen and Billy. Helen is the surviving sibling.

Pete attended rural grade school in Roberts County and then completed a three-year program at the Ag High School (WCSA) of the University of Minnesota in Morris, Minn. This agriculture high school’s mission was to educate youth on contemporary agriculture methods and provide core academic instruction. Students accepted were at least 14 and eighth grade graduates. This three-year course of study ran from early October, after the fall harvest, until March before spring planting. Living on his own on campus, eating in the dining hall and roommates were new experiences for a young farm boy. Pete graduated from West Central School of Agriculture in March of 1948 at age 17.

At age 19 Pete was drafted into the Army. He was a Private E-1 in the Army and served in the Korean War and was a truck driver. Pete was awarded the Korean Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Good Conduct Medal. He was the backup mail driver and enjoyed going to Seoul, Korea to pick up the mail because he got an especially good lunch on those trips. Pete was released from two years active military service to Army Reserve to complete eight years of service under the Universal Military Training and Service Act.

Pete worked as a farmer for most of his life and worked and retired from Texaco Oil (formerly Getty Oil) as a driver later in his life.

Pete loved the Reil family farm and returned to spend his retirement years there. He and his children hosted the 100th Centurion Reil farm celebration in July of 2019.

Pete was a member of the Lutheran Church, Missouri Synod.

Pete is survived by his wife Cleo of Glendive.

From his previous marriage to Sharon Tillman, Dad is survived by his children Matt, Desiree (Matt) Ricketts, Johanna, Julie, Clint (Susie), Rebecca, and Tony (Staci). He was proud of his grandchildren Blake (Lindsey), Clint (Amy), Brady, William (Alix), Jessica, Jade, Sandy Jr., Abbi, Lele, Rori, and Nolan, Tucker, Gunner, Tymber, and one great-grandson, Dax also survive Grandpa Pete.

Cleo’s two daughters, Cara (Samantha, Luke, Lily, Josh) and Lori (Tessa, Shelby, Brooke), were part of Pete’s life, too.

Lavern passed away from pneumonia on Christmas Day in the Glendive hospital. Special thanks to the great nurses and Dr. Leal and staff for their kind care.
