Town of Winnett inspires a new novel by a New York City author

Wanting to write something about rural small town America, Susan Henderson stepped away from the rat race of New York City and spent a month in Winnett, where she stayed at the Northern Hotel.

No TV. No landline. No Internet.

“I was entirely disconnected from the world I knew,” she said. “I was cut off from it all, haunted by the clamor that goes on in my head.”

At night, loneliness crept in, which sometimes led to fear.

Farm Rescue now taking apps for planting assistance

(AP) – The Plains farm aid nonprofit Farm Rescue is accepting applications for spring crop-planting assistance.

Farm Rescue provides free physical labor for farmers and ranchers dealing with an injury, illness or a natural disaster. It relies on volunteers from around the country, donations and corporate sponsors.

It was launched in North Dakota in 2006 and has since expanded to South Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Montana and Nebraska. Its services include crop planting and harvesting, haying, and hay and grain hauling.

Wind project getting off the ground

Upper Badlands Wind Development, LLC is in the process of developing a wind energy project in Dawson County that, if built, has the potential to bring a huge boost to the local economy.

The company is laying the groundwork for a wind farm north of Lindsay.

Upper Badlands Wind Development, LLC project manager John Husar and his son John Husar, Jr., officially announced the project last week, although pre-development plans began two years ago.

The plans include the installation of up to 89 wind turbine generators, according to Husar, Sr.

A Montana State University graduate student who once picked rocks and cut thistle heads on her family’s farm and now researches wheat genes recently returned from another round of meetings with national ag leaders.

Emma Jobson, 25, was one of 10 national graduate students and 20 undergraduates who were selected for a weeklong trip to Washington, D.C., through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Student Diversity Program. She was the only student from Montana selected to attend. Last year, Jobson participated in a similar program offered by the Agricultural Tri-Societies.

Makoshika tourney makes a big impact

After 161 games were played on eight courts in five locations over three days, the players, coaches and fans of the 26th Annual Makoshika Basketball Tournament drifted back to their homes across several states and provinces, but not before leaving an impact on the local economy.

“They were great guests and Glendive’s hotels, restaurants and retailers did a wonderful job welcoming and taking care of our out-oftown guests,” Glendive Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture Executive Director Christine Whitlatch said.

The Middle of Nowhere

Once upon a time someone marketed t-shirts depicting a highway sign that read something like this ‘End of the World 14 miles. Glendive, Montana 16 miles.’ A new study suggests that lighthearted message is actually not too far off.

Research published in the journal Nature recently sought to identify the middle of nowhere. Reporting by Andrew Van Dam of the Washington Post says Glendive has a strong claim on the distinction.
