We must do better as a country

Dear Editor,

This past Friday, I returned home from a trip to Mexico. While I was there I had dinner with a dear friend. She is an American of Irish descent who is married to a Mexican. She has lived in Mexico for more than 20 years and has dual citizenship in the United States and Mexico. This friend is intelligent, hard working, and fun to be with. She owns a consulting business where she does work for companies around the world. She and her husband have raised three great children, two in college and one in high school. While we were at dinner she told me that each summer they come to the United States to visit family and do school shopping. This year, for the first time, she was afraid. She is afraid for her children (who are also US citizens) and she is afraid for this country. I am sickened by this. What is wrong with our society where there is so much hate, so much violence? We should be better than this and it needs to start with each of us. I love my country, but I too am afraid for her. We must do better.
